She was living there in 1978 when the constitution was approved and Spain was returned to democracy. She then returned to Britain to study for a postgraduate degree at Cambridge University. She was awarded an M.Litt. degree for a thesis on the work of the Argentinian writer, Jorge Luis Borges. She looked at his work in particular in relation to various English authors that had influenced him. This thesis lead to the later publication of four academic articles, two reviews and one interview for the BBC World Service. One of these articles, entitled 'Borges, De Quincey and the Interpretation of Words', is currently being recommended by Oxford University. Three of the articles are recommended by the University of Leipzig. She was recently cited in the Modern Language Review as an authority on the influence of Sir Thomas Browne on Borges. (Anyone interested in the details can follow this link to all the articles.) Many years later she wrote the text for a book about the South American photography of Marko Modic. In the 1980's she discovered computers. She wrote the STANCALL software for students studying Spanish at St. Andrews University and it proved popular with several generations of students. STANCALL This software was also used with "¡Qué Bien! An Intensive Course in Spanish for Beginners" (by Jones and Macklin). At the end of 2004 she went to Barcelona where she received the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults) from International House. In 2005 she returned, after many years away, to live in her native Scotland, near Edinburgh, where she was born.
